Arbitration/Mediation

Marc J. Siegel is a sought-after labor and employment arbitrator and mediator able to quickly understand both sides of complex issues. He has advanced negotiation expertise, business acumen, and an innate ability to foster calm and easily relate to and empathize with all parties.

Background

Marc’s ability to understand competing perspectives has been honed by practicing labor and employment law in Chicago his entire career, first for seven years with Laner Muchin, a preeminent mid-size Chicago management-side labor and employment firm.

He advised employers on all types of employment matters, including conducting audits of employment practices, running organizing campaigns, handling collective bargaining, and defending numerous employment cases before the EEOC and unfair labor practices before the NLRB.

He then co-founded Caffarelli & Siegel, a boutique employee-side labor and employment firm, and served as managing partner. Mr. Siegel went on to found Siegel & Dolan, an employee-side labor and employment firm, where he serves as managing partner.

After nearly 20 years counseling and advising hourly employees, CEOs, physicians, university faculty, and other professionals, he has highly developed abilities to relate to and empathize with parties of all backgrounds and experiences. He has successfully negotiated six-figure severance packages countless times, as well as favorable outcomes in wage and hour disputes, even when tensions and anxieties are high.

Negotiation Experience

Mr. Siegel’s negotiation expertise has been widely recognized. For example:

  • As a speaker at national conferences, legal associations, and universities, he has taught thousands of lawyers and emerging industry leaders how to get better results, build stronger relationships, and broker deals past an impasse to reach favorable agreements.
  • His website, Consult the Negotiator, draws on his extensive experience at the negotiating table to help lawyers master the art of negotiations.
  • He is regularly engaged as a negotiation consultant.

Mr. Siegel applies his negotiation skills as a neutral, since 2011 as a certified mediator available both independently and through Resolute Systems. In 2013, he became an appointed American Arbitration Association (AAA) arbitrator in labor and employment matters. Mr. Siegel is constantly seeking to hone his skills helping parties reach agreement, and has completed numerous trainings, including:

He steers the parties’ and lawyers’ momentum – be it motivated by anger, indignation or distress – on a path to resolution of the dispute.” John O’Connor, FordHarrison
  • “He has impressed me with how he really digs down to the heart of the issue, and forces each side to seriously evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. I have been impressed how Marc does his homework before the mediation. In addition to reviewing the mediation statements, he speaks with both sides, and is very prepared to address key issues at mediation. Marc has a very mellow style that puts everyone at ease. He does an excellent job of summarizing each side’s position at the beginning of the mediation in a neutral, objective way, so that the parties do not antagonize each other with opening statements. I recommend Marc highly and would use him as a mediator for other cases.” Jody Wilner Moran, Jackson Lewis P.C.
